How to Select an Engagement Ring

So you've made the big decision and decided it's time you popped the question! Congratulations -- this is only the start of the excitement, you have an engagement, a wedding and a honeymoon -- probably the most exciting -- to plan. But before all of this, she has to say yes.
While asking someone to marry you can be nerve-racking, it can be a lot easier if you know the ring will suit her taste and make her cry with excitement. It can be difficult to know what to choose, especially if you've never paid a great deal of attention to jewellery before, and often can be one of the factors that make people most nervous about asking someone to marry them.

In order to find the perfect ring for your future fiancé, there are a few factors -- cost, size and style -- and if you can get these right, you'll be celebrating in no time!
Cost
Engagement rings obviously come at a range of costs, and so long as you are realistic, you can find a ring to suit your budget. Diamond rings are obviously most traditional, and also range in price significantly. Before going shopping, set your budget, know what you have to spend, and ensure you don't look at a single ring that costs more than you have!
Sizing
The size of the ring is important -- it's nice to have it fit the first time, instead of waiting for it to be resized before she can wear it. The best way to know, if possible, is to take another of her rings along with you when you go to the jewellers. Worse-case scenario, try one of her rings on your little finger and see where and how it fits so you have something to go by.
Style
This is the tricky bit. There are so many styles of rings available, it can be confusing and you may start to think you'll never know the right answer. Here's where some detective work comes in.
First you need to select the colour of the band -- white, yellow or rose gold. White is modern, yellow is quite traditional, and it is not uncommon to see rose on antique or vintage rings. Most people have a preference, and knowing what hers is, can be as easy as looking at her other special pieces of jewellery. Forget costume jewellery -- that is bought to match outfits -- and check out special pieces she has received for milestone occasions. If all else fails, check if there's a piece she always wears and match it!
After band type, the next choice is stone. A diamond, being traditional is always a safe bet, however like rings, there are a range of other stones available. Perhaps match it with her birthstone to show your intimate knowledge of her, or again, check out her other jewellery to see if she has a preference.
Set
This is the toughest bit of all. Do you get a huge rock? Something subtle? Modern? Traditional? Again, the best way to determine what she will like, is what she has liked in the past. If she has a lot of big and chunky jewellery it is safe to say she won't be opposed to a large stone. If most of her jewellery is simple, intricate and fine, she is likely more interested the detail in the design than the size of the stone.
Once you've made your decision and selected the ring, you always have the option of getting a second opinion. If you decide to show the ring to someone trusted, who knows her and her tastes well, ensure its only one person -- your new fiancé will want to tell as many people as possible!
